Canon: Transistor
Age: 27
Gender: female
Canon Point: After the fight with Royce, when she escapes from the Cradle.
Background Link: right here!
Inventory:
Clothes: her dress, belt, stockings, shoes, and the coat she took from the 'nameless man'.
The Transistor: Technically she has this with her, but seeing as how it's basically a giant sword/flash drive combo, I imagine it won't be with her when she wakes up.
Personality: To begin with, Red is extremely intelligent. She went to a college for civic planners and architects, and a particularly demanding one at that, though she chose to double-major in music and linguistics instead of in any of the more traditional degrees for that school. She wrote and performed all of her own music, showing a strong command of both written and spoken language. Just looking at the lyrics to some of her songs shows how well she can weave a metaphor and hide a message behind some pretty words. Before she even graduated, she showed promise. She was in the spotlight pretty early in her career, and she seemed to blossom under the pressure.
Another mark of Red's intelligence is how combat works within Transistor. Throughout the game, the player unlocks functions, which are basically different types of attacks. Crash(), for example, hits an enemy and makes them vulnerable to further attacks, while Cull() is a very strong attack that stuns an enemy, and Bounce() is an attack that bounces off of the first enemy and hits others in turn. Each function has three different properties, and can be used as an attack, a modifier to an attack, or as a passive effect. So Crash(Cull()), for example, would perform the Crash() attack at a higher damage rate, and Crash (Bounce()) allows Crash() to hit more than one enemy at a time. Part of the game is experimenting with the different variations and seeing which attacks yield the best results. Since Red is, in-universe, the one setting up all of these functions, it is implied that she knows a fair bit of computer coding and how to use what she learns to efficiently kill enemies.
Red is considered one of the most powerful performers of her generation, and not without reason. Prior to the loss of her voice, she was perhaps the most popular singer within the city of Cloudbank, having sold out shows regularly. People would pay top dollar to go listen to her sing, and her songs were so moving that they had been known to cause change within people. At one performance a riot broke out, and those involved blamed Red, saying she was "an instigator and provocateur". The game never explains what exactly it was she enticed people to do, but it hints at the possibility of a social upheaval. Red could have become the voice of a revolution, if the events within Transistor had not happened.
And that is a very believable possibility, if you look at the kind of person Red is. In all of her songs, she has a gentle yet powerful voice, one that can warm even the coldest of hearts. And though her songs all have pretty benign messages, they are still inspiring. And even now, with her voice gone, she still has quite the commanding personality. Her face is just as expressive as her voice had been, and she can hold people's attention, or even silence their arguments with a stern gaze. She just has a huge presence, one that can take up an entire room. It is very hard for her to go unnoticed.
Perhaps that was why the Camerata had labeled her a threat. Perhaps that was why they had tried to absorb her into the Transistor, so that her voice and her power would be under their control. In the end it didn't really matter, since they failed and all. But their attempt on her life, it changed her. Not only did she lose her voice, but she also became a harsher person because of it. Before the attack, Red had been a genuinely agreeable person, happy to sing and bring joy to others. But after the attempt on her life, which took the life of someone dear to her instead, she became bitter and determined. She may not have intended to spark a revolution before then, but after? The Camerata had one dangerous person gunning for them, set on forcing answers out of them.
Of course, to get to them, she has to survive against insurmountable odds. Red is not a fighter (as evidenced by the fact that she had a bodyguard to protect her), and she is in no way prepared to fight other people, let alone the monsters known as 'The Process'. But despite how ill-prepared she is, Red is a determinator, and she can force herself through just about anything. Despite having watched someone she cared for die while protecting her, she quickly pulls herself back up, grabs the Transistor, and pushes forward. She knows nothing about combat, but she learns quickly, picking up function after function as she goes. She is a survivor, first and foremost, and she won't let herself fail.
As the game progresses, Red gradually loses that bitterness towards the Camerata. Not only does time pass, giving her a chance to cool off and take out her frustrations on the various Process monsters she finds, but she also exchanges several correspondences with the Camerata. Asher in particular is a person she talks to a lot, and there is a noticeable change between how she first addresses him and her last correspondence with him. It helps that, as things progress, Asher admits to how out-of-hand things had gotten, and how much regret they all felt. In the beginning it was easy for Red to be mad, because the Camerata was presented as some unforgiving force trying to control Cloudbank. But as the plot progresses and the player is shown how human the members of the Camerata are, Red's own opinion of them softens. This shows that she will not stand for injustice, but that she is sympathetic towards people too. Red never fully forgives the Camerata, but she understands them better, even if she does not agree with what they did.
Despite never speaking within the game itself, Red has quite the personality. Unlike most 'voiceless protagonists', where the player's choices affect their personality, Red has a set personality from the get-go that shines through her actions rather than her words. If you leave her standing idle for a while, she adjusts her grip on the Transistor, showing how unusual it is for her to be holding something so heavy. She also fusses with her hair, showing that she does care about her appearance, even though she may possibly be in danger. In addition, there are frequent news updates at terminals spread throughout the city, which Red can respond to. For most of her responses, she starts out typing something serious, or trying to give out real information, but eventually deletes what she writes and tries again, wording it slightly differently. This typically happens 3-4 times before she finally types something innocuous. For example, in response to a news report about a city block being deleted, she first types out an accusation against the Camerata, which is deleted and changed into a warning not to believe what they see, which is deleted and changed into a warning for everyone to stay away, which is deleted and changed into a simple "I'm alright, I made it out", which is finally posted. This shows that her first instinct is to call attention to what is really going on, but she quickly stops herself for the sake of everyone else. People really listen to her, and if she started spewing doomsday warnings, it might induce a panic. Even though she wants to reveal the Camerata's deeds to the world, she stops herself, for the sake of everyone else.
Ultimately, that is one of Red's most important characteristics: she honestly cares about other people. Though she is powerful and can move the general public with her songs, she still wants to keep them safe. In canon she insists that she does not want to stir up controversy with her music, she just wants to sing and make others happy with her songs. Though she does have a bit of a temper, she would prefer peace to fighting.
Flavor Abilities: She can't really sing anymore, what with the lack of a voice and all, but she can hum! There are no special properties to her humming, other than the fact that it sounds nice.
Suitability:Red's entire canon is about surviving despite being pursued by monsters, so she will be able to survive in Norfinbury just fine. She may not like it, but she'll adjust.
At the canon point I am taking Red from, she has just emerged from the Cradle and is expecting to see Cloudbank after the Process has been stopped. Since nobody in Snowblind even knows about Cloudbank, it's going to take her a little bit of time to figure out that this is not her home and that what has happened in Norfinbury is not a result of what happened in her canon. (It had been snowing in her world when she went into the Cradle, so seeing snow everywhere is not too far of a stretch for her.)
After that, being in contact with real people will be a nice thing for her (she had been isolated in canon), but she will buckle down pretty quickly and start helping the others solve the mystery of Norfinbury/hopefully escape from there. Red is resourceful and can spur people into action, so she will try to help with the interpersonal issues that have been plaguing Norfinbury lately. Also, she will help other people too, because that's how she rolls.

[Red rubs at her temples as she contemplates just what to post to the network. That post from last night? That was the third time someone had foolishly locked themselves up in the funeral home. Three times now, and it always got the same result. Red understands trying the same thing multiple times, but this is just too much.]

What were you thinking?! Is it really so important that you risk not coming back at all just to
Was that really necessary? I think we got the point the first two
All you're doing is making others worry
We have all seen this happen three times now, I think we get the point. Let's talk this through before anyone tries it again. There's no guarantee that anyone will come back, and with three tries already completed, we don't need to risk a fourth person for it.
Please come back.

Sometimes, on the nights when Red found a house that sheltered her from the cold slightly better than usual, Red managed to sleep long enough to dream.
They were always warm, inviting. Usually she was in a field of wheat, with a squat farmhouse and a tall barn in the distance. Even though there was a breeze, it didn't feel cold. Nothing felt cold there. She would walk through the wheat at a leisurely pace, clearly moving towards something but not in a hurry to get there.
He was always there too. It had only been a few weeks since she last saw him, but already his face was beginning to fade from her memory. Instead, she remembered how tall he was, how safe it felt to be around him. And his voice, that was what always came through her dreams clearly. Even in her dreams he spoke to her, and everything felt like it would be okay.
"Hey."
"...Hi."
But as soon as she found him, she always woke up, the warmth of the sunlight fading into the cold of the snow. This time was no different than the rest, and Red found herself shivering as she pulled his coat around her shoulders.
He was gone now. Besides her memories, this was all she had left of him.
Mornings were the worst. Before her mind was awake, when she was still fighting away both sleep and the shivers, Red rarely smiled. She never cried, especially not with traveling companions with her. She didn't want them to wake up and worry about her. Instead, she quietly moved over to a spot further away from them, curled up in a ball, and waited.
When people were awake, she could smile. She could act like everything was okay, even if she was feeling torn up inside. It was much easier for her to pretend when she had a person to pretend for. Performances were her thing, after all. And when she had something to work on, like finding food or figuring out some obscure puzzle ('dig deep' indeed), she was alright. It was moments like this, when she had nothing to distract her, that Red actually had a somber look on her face.
It would be a bit longer before anyone else in her group woke up, so while she waited, she pulled out her tablet and opened the notepad app on her tablet. If nothing else, maybe she could work a bit more on one of her songs. ...well, poetry now, technically. Even though she could hum along, she would never be able to sing these words, so it wouldn't ever be a song.
Okay, maybe it wasn't a day for writing songs. Red flipped to another document in the notepad app, one labeled 'andthentheresthisasshole', and started typing furiously, writing out her feelings about a certain someone whom she was very displeased with. Not that they would ever see what she had written, but writing out her frustrations seemed to help, sometimes.
Hopefully nobody surprises her, though, or they might catch a glimpse of her rantings, which would totally wreck her 'cool, calm, collected' outward appearance she tried to project most of the time.
