Basically, a computer works by turning things 'on' and 'off'. Everything about a computer is built around that idea. Typing letters is just a long series of flipping 'on' and 'off' switches, the combinations of which equal each individual letter. Similarly, any computer function runs the same way. You write the function, and then decide if you want that function 'on' or 'off.'
