If they're gone, who have we been talking to? And I don't mean the... zombies or whatever you want to call them. I mean when their real selves come through sometimes.

The one controlling them, the stone god, is a tricky one. They might be trying to use the voices of those campers to influence all of you.

But... we were told that their souls are still there. That they're just caught.

I am trying to destroy the stone and kill it off for good. Isn't it natural to lie when your life is on the line?

Yeah! Back when we gave them that offering, the cat told Kirijo something like... "the stone god is holding the souls in its mouth." Meaning they're trapped, but they haven't been consumed yet!
